Last week I talked about the odor from the BP burn off at my school. I was lightheaded all day, and my nose seemed to instantly stuff up. I didn’t think much of it, because when I got home I felt better, and Saturday was good. Sunday, though, I felt bone tired and I felt a cough coming. As the day went on, I also felt that slight fever high. I Instacarted some cough medicine, acetaminophen, and a COVID test just to be safe. I didn’t test Sunday, because one shouldn’t test on the first day you feel symptoms. So I waited until Monday afternoon. I wasn’t too worried, even though I still felt the fever high the next day, even after a few rounds of Tussin. After all, every other time I tested I was negative, and being fairly solitary I had never gotten COVID. Ever. I kinda felt I was a bit invincible. Over three years COVID free, watching so many of my friends get it, all my siblings—multiple times too. Then I saw the test. Almost immediately the sample line turned the darkest red while the control line was faint. I was hoping that the control line wouldn’t appear because that would mean a bad test. Sadly, the line was there. I asked brillig about it, and she said that if the control line was any darker the sample line could have been seen from space. I was BLINDINGLY positive.
Well shit, thought I. There goes my week. I had already taken Monday off from school because of how I was feeling on Sunday. So I did three things. 1, I took the rest of the week off. Cause policy. 5 days isolation, then 5 masked. 2, I informed my department head, co choir teacher, the district arts director, and my principal. 3, and most important, I scored a quick telehealth appointment to get a script for Paxlovid. Which I was able to pick up that afternoon. Then treatment started.
Ya’ll, Paxlovid is the real deal. First, I have been sleeping longer and better than I have in years. Second, by Tuesday any kind of fever and cough was gone. On Wednesday, my stuffy, runny nose had cleared up, with my raw nostrils thanking Paxlovid from bringing relief from constant tissue and hanky wiping. Even though it makes my mouth taste like a moldy ashtray, and the pills smell worse than cipro, take it if you get it.
Bonuses. I have been working with my therapist ever since lockdown to curb my drinking. Some people baked bread, some gained a ton of weight, and others, like me, began to indulge in the wine a bit too much. It became an issue for me.
But, after reading all the information provided with the script, I have not taken a drop all week. I’m back. So, good things CAN come from having COVID.
In the meantime I’ve been resting, noodling around the internets, napping, and doing an occasional chore. I can’t wait to get back to school on Monday. I miss my kids, and I hope they’ve missed me too. We have a performance on the 22nd, and some HARD music to perform for our Spring concert. Plus I can get back in my own performance mindset. Because I have a BIG audition coming up in a couple weeks, and a couple big concerts in the next few weeks after that.
And speaking of big stuff, there may or may not be a Saturday TC diary next week. It’s State Solo and Ensemble, and I have to drive the activity bus to Indianapolis and back. I’ll see what I can do.
So stay healthy and vigilant, mask up, and on to Tops!

My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. From belinda ridgewood:
Today, Greg Dworkin's Abbreviated Pundit Roundup of course contained much discussion of the outrageous report by Special Counsel Hur. I thought Crashing Vor made an excellent point.
