As some of you may or may not know, I had bariatric surgery in 2019. I had the sleeve gastrectomy, which is where the doctor removes about 80% of the stomach, leaving a pouch about as big as a medium banana. So how does that affect my eating?
Welp, you see that deck of cards in the picture? You’ve heard that that’s a proper size for a portion of meat—say 4-5 ounces. That’s an entire MEAL for a bariatric patient.
Join me below the necessaries to learn how to fit 80g of protein, plus veg and carbs into a 5oz meal

So, the bariatric diet. First thing to remember is that one has to have at least 80g of protein a day. Why? Side effects of a poor diet include loss of hair, loss of teeth, and brittle bones. I have enough dental issues as it is without my teeth falling out, thank you very much.
But how to get that much protein with such a small meal size? The answer is “less more often”. Bariatric patients will often have 4-5 5oz meals per day, with maybe a snack. This allows for getting necessary nutrients.
BUT--there’s a catch. First of all, NO LIQUIDS AT ALL during meals. After eating, you must wait at least a half hour before taking a sip of anything, even water. Why? To give the tiny stomach time to process and break down all the nutrients. The second catch can be even worse. Because the pouch is so small, certain things will not get processed enough by the time they move to the small intestines. Things like sugar and excess fat. The body can’t take that much unprocessed sugar, and so the body rejects it. Anything else added to that is TMI, so I won’t
So there are nutritional benefits, as one is obligated to eat much more nutritious food.
Living alone, when I go to the store, I can’t find protein in portion sizes that I need. And if I only use enough vegetables for one meal, they can go bad before I finish them off. So, I do batch cooking/meal prepping. I can make a bunch of stuff, like a family pack of steaks, for example, then cut them up and weigh them out and portion them into meals. With some of my dishes I get over a week’s worth of meals, all neatly portioned into containers and ready to reheat.
This is by far NOT a diet like Keto. This is balancing your nutritional needs for optimal weight loss. However, the corollary is that one’s medical team—doctor, dietician, etc.--MAY recommend a certain diet based on one’s metabolic and body chemistry needs.
In conclusion the bariatric diet is NOT repeat NOT “eat what you want just in smaller portions”. It’s a whole lifestyle change to properly healthy eating making sure you get all your macros in the right amounts. There’s so much more I can write, but this diary is getting on, and we need to get to Tops!
