Last week began the 2021-2022 school year for me. Two teacher work days, then the first three days of school.

So first: Our COVID protocols. I teach in Indiana, but in the Northwest corner—essentially a Chicago suburb. Our superintendent is a good ‘un. He wants in person learning, and is doing everything to ensure that we stay that way. To wit—ALL students K-12 will be fully masked for the first grading period, regardless of vaccination status. Teachers who have shown proof of vaccinations may unmask if they are further than 6 feet away. And the students are doing extremely well at following this. We are in a brand spanking new building as a result of a district wide consolidation. So far the students from different schools are getting along

And how are things going for me and my classrooms, you ask? I have a story below the jump.

I was doing a "getting to know you" questionnaire with my students and it included the prompt "One thing that can be better about school is..."
Among the many thoughtful answers there was one that flew off the page and smacked me in my motivation. It was "I wish teachers would understand us". I shared this answer with all my classes and the discussions that then happened motivated me more than almost anything. Our students WANT and NEED relationships with us. After all, sometimes we forget that we were once where they are and we also wanted our teachers to understand us. This is relationship building at its essence. When we start understanding each other, we just won't be slinging dopamine, each classroom will be a dopamine bomb exploding every day. And on another note, another prompt was for the students to choose ten words that describe themselves. Perhaps the most prominent word they used was "kind". Another great discussion topic. We talked about a "Culture of Kindness" in our classes. Encouraging our students to just be kind to each other. After all  our discussions, I am more energized and motivated than I have been in a long time. My kids were slinging dopamine at me. How can I not reciprocate?
And now on to tops!
