Today is the start of Teacher Appreciation Week. Most teachers I know have the following reaction to “Teacher Appreciation”:
Why? Because if we were REALLY appreciated, we wouldn’t have to fight so hard for basics such as supplies for our classroom.
But, the country being what it is, teachers have to rely on our pockets and the good will of others. Which is why Donors Choose is so important to teachers.
For instance, as a music teacher serving underserved kids, I have used Donors Choose for various things. Now I’m trying to turn my high school general music class from something boring into a class where the kids will be engaged, interested, and have the opportunity for personal growth.
I wish to turn my classes into guitar classes.
In middle school and high school general music classes, often times students are "placed" in those classes when their "first choice" elective is full. These students are not interested, not engaged, and don't want to be there.
Turning a class like that into a guitar class changes all that.
Now, students want to be in class. They want to be engaged. They want to learn.
Such a simple thing can make a complete difference in not only the classroom experience but also in a potentially troubled life. A guitar class can provide an outlet for saying the things the student wants to say, but saying them with song.
